Course & Class
Structure
Core Class Structure: Attunement
Each class begins with an attunement, allowing us to settle into our bodies, into the group, into the larger field.
Core Class Structure: Q&A
This is where the class becomes a creative cauldron as questions, ideas, insights bubble up through our interaction. And of course this permeates the class from beginning to end, not just during "official" Q&A's.
Weekly Partnership
Weekly peer partnership Focusing practice is the heart of this program. During Core Class weeks, your full partnership will occur outside of class times. During Partnership Clinic weeks, that practice happens during the class. (Of course, additional practice time with a fellow student or existing partner is always welcome!)
Core Class Structure: Check-in
Next, we have a check-in, which gives us a chance to take stock of what’s come up since the prior class – what worked, what didn’t, new questions, experiences and new insights to share…
Core Class Structure: Demo
There is always a demonstration of the new aspect of Focusing Partnership that we will be exploring in the current class.
Partnership Clinic Structure
Alternating with each Core Class is a Partnership Clinic. We will begin each Clinic with a check-in about how the last week's peer partnership went; proceed to our partnership practice; and have a full Q&A/sharing afterwards
Core Class Structure: Mini-lecture
This is where I introduce new material and/or perhaps an experiential exercise to help embody it.
Core Class Structure: Focusing Partnership
Our partnerships are based around the themes of the week. This is usually briefer than a full partnership session because of everything else happening in the class - this makes the partnership occurring outside of the class essential.
This is a 9-month course
The nine months allows us the space and time needed to grow into a new way of relating to our own experiencing. There are three modules, each with 12 classes. We meet on Wednesdays, September 9, 2026 through June 16, 2027, from 10:00 am-12:30 pm. Click here to see detailed course calendar, including breaks.
We alternate between Core Classes and Partnership Clinics
We will be alternating two types of classes - (1) more formally structured (but still highly experiential) Core Classes and (2) Partnership Clinics
General Program
Module 1 – Foundations of Felt Sensing: Opening up to the MORE

The foundation of Focusing is what we refer to as the Felt Sense, and this is the foundation of Focusing for Spiritual Development. The Felt Sensing realm is the realm of the MORE that is always available to us.

It is through our bodies, from the inside, that we experience the world.

When something happens that feels overwhelming to us and we don’t have the relational resources to deal with it, our body – our whole being – constricts.

Sometimes the way we behave in the world may indeed be a matter of misunderstanding, of having simply learned counter-productive habits of living.

But our deepest struggles arise because of these deep constrictions of our being, which can feel like a matter of survival. We end up being cut off not only from our bodies, but from our contact with the MORE that is otherwise available to us…

This is why simply understanding that we should love ourselves, that we should love others, that we should just let it go, that we’re all one, and so on, is not enough.

It is only through a deep, experiential path that we can allow these bodily constrictions, including our awareness, to relax and open up, allowing us a deeper, restorative contact with life.

In Module 1, we establish a firm foundation that includes:

-
A brief history of Focusing and the discovery of Felt Sensing
-
The neurological basis of Felt Sensing
-
Gendlin’s principle of “Interaction First” – This is why Felt Sensing works
-
The true nature of embodiment from a spiritual point of view (specifically, as viewed through the lens of Judith Blackstone’s Realization Process)
-
The physical body as the foundation of presence
-
Becoming aware of (or reviewing) some of the body’s basic spiritual anatomy and its relationship to settling deeply into the physical body
-
Learning to trust that the body has its own conscious intelligence, different from the intelligence of my friendly and curious Adult Observer Self
-
Learning the language of the body, which is not the language of the intellect
-
Learning to PAUSE and rest into the not-knowing
-
We learn to settle and ground into the layers of the Wholebody – because as crucial as the physical body is, it is just one layer of the living tapestry of our Wholebody.
Brief background of the
foundational sources for this course
Eugene Gendlin’s Focusing
I have been a Focusing trainer and guide since 2010, and the Focusing process is at the heart of this course. Eugene Gendlin discovered Focusing while researching the question of why some people change from therapy and others do not during the 1960s. More specifically, he discovered that a person’s ability to connect with their own bodily felt sense of their situation seemed to be the basis of change. Over the years, different streams of Focusing developed.
Relational Wholebody Focusing
This is the bedrock of this program. It’s overarching theme of healing through reconnecting with one’s own wholeness resonates beautifully with the theme of spiritual repair. This style of Focusing was developed by Karen Whalen.
Inner Relationship Focusing
Inner Relationship Focusing informs much of my work. Ann Weiser Cornell brought clarity to the Focusing process by recognizing that one needed to be self-in-presence if one were to fully access the felt sense, rather than unconsciously merged with a part of oneself. She founded Inner Relationship Focusing, together with colleague Barbara McGavin.
Realization Process
The embodiment aspect of this spiritual path undergirds this course. The Realization Process was developed by Judith Blackstone over 30 years ago. Her sense of embodiment as an essential element of spiritual development is not only beautifully resonant with Focusing, but uniquely helpful in its precision.

What you will take away
from this course

-
You will understand the nature of the body as inherently spiritual

-
You will have the capacity to actually develop a spirituality profoundly and satisfyingly connected to your everyday self, rather than a spirituality of escape that focuses on the craving for spiritual highs

-
Know how to establish the foundational safety and inner stability needed for this work

-
You will have the capacity to return to direct contact with the wholeness of your situation through learning how to be with the painful piece of it you feel trapped in right now

-
You will be able to recognize and relate differently to reactive patterns

-
Rather than falling into spiritual bypass, you will have the capacity to stay present and open to difficult inner experience while at the same time staying in contact with the MORE

-
You will have the capacity to listen inwardly in a way that allows something that feels fresh, brand-new and alive to emerge into areas of your life that have felt like dead-ends

-
You will be able to sit with another person in difficulty with a sense of being in the Wonder together, rather than with a sense of helping them fix their life

-
Instead of experiencing your own difficulties as signs of what’s wrong with you, you will be able to experience them as portals into deeper connection with something larger than a too-small sense of yourself
At its heart, this course is about learning to relate to yourself and to others in a way that allows fresh possibility, real change and - most of all - a deepened and direct connection to the Life that holds us all
